The Bahamas

In 1998 Anna and I traveled to the Bahamas to sail with my cousin Leighton, and his two daughters Hannah and Emily. What a wonderful time. Along with us was Leighton's friend Tom and Emily's friend Casey. Later in the trip some friends of Leighton's from England; Jacky, Noel, Georgie joined us. I'll never forget this trip.

The year before was Uncle Bob's 80th birthday. Uncle Bob worked as an aerospace engineer all his life and his kids got together to give him a birthday party at Kitty Hawk NC. Leighton had asked me many times to go sailing with him.

In fact, when we were kids Leighton and I planned many things to do together. Leighton would come down to Mt. Olive to visit his grandparents (who lived next door) and we would have the best times together. We planned to drive across the United States together in a car. When Leighton and I were driving age we set out. We did not make it across the United States but we did make it all the way up the east coast from Morehead City NC to Ocean City MD. Here is a picture of our campsite at the Oregon Inlet campground during that trip (in the background you can see the Hilman we drove during our 'camping-up-the-coast' trip). While on that trip Leighton and I planned to sail around the world. About 10 years later when Evelyn and I were in Mt. Olive visiting Leighton came by, he was sailing his father's boat down the Intercoastal Waterway from Baltimore to Ft Lauderdale. He was ready to go around the world. I begged off saying that I was married now and was in school and so forth and so on. Years later after Leighton go married and had a family he started a yearly tradition of flying over to the United States and sailing his boat from Ft. Lauderdale to the Bahamas and back each August. He asked me many times to come sailing with him and I always seemd to find some excuse for not doing it.

At his dad's party once again Leighton said, "Zach, come sailing with me this year." Well, I'm the workaholic and I said perhaps next year. Leighton says, "You're on!" He then told me I could come alone or with one of my kids.

Well I said, "Let's see I go home and announce that I'm going sailing in the Bahamas alone but I had a chance to bring one of my kids and I said no I'll go by myself."

Hmmm... Needless to say a family member would be coming along. Later Hannah came up to me and said, "Uncle Zach, bring Anna." Well there you go Anna and I were off to the Bahamas the next summer.
