(My all time top speed on a bicycle!)

Rain, thunderstorm, dark, traffic all the things I do not like to start a bike ride in. Huge ascent right away. Sogggy wet. Walked the last 1-1.5 miles to the top, and first rest stop. I did speed up part way through the walk when Joe Miller from the News and Observer caught up with me (he was walking too). I got to talk to Joe quite a few times on this trip, he is a really fine fellow. Joe reported the whole ride in the N&O and on his cycling web pages. Joe's last report on the ride, sort of a wrap up of the whole ride features a quote from me about my new bike. When I got the NCBC newsletter for January 2000 I saw a notice that Jim & Liz Zearfoss were going to give a report of their experiences on this tour. The NCBC page has a link to their report

The decent was not too bad since it stopped raining right at the top and because there was a rest stop there too. We had a long ride on US64 to Brevard (mostly a decent). A beautiful valley along the way. The valley ran parallel to US64 once we exited at the town of Rosman. We stayed in cabins at Camp Carolina in Bevard. Had my bike washed, this may not have been a good idea since all the lube that was apparently allowing my rear deraleiur to work was washed off. Got to dry out most everything while at the camp. Another Blue Grass band "Blue Kudzu". I went to town to a ATM machine to get some money to buy their tape. Going to town in the shuttle van was nice, I got to ride without pedeling. The barbecue for supper was great. The staff of the summer camp we stayed at came back and fixed supper and breakfast for us. The name of the camp was Camp Carolina, a boys summer camp. You can really tell it was a boys camp because the cabin I stayed in had names and dates painted on the walls. I think some of those dates were from the times that I was going to summer camp.
